October 2012 Meeting

The October is a wonderful month for quilters. The weather starts to get colder and we start wanting to pull covers over our legs at night and it's a good a time as any to start new Projects! Or at least I did. Ann Bower demonstrated for us how to do a twisted nine patch or disappearing nine patch.
Connie showed us her prize winning quilt that placed both at the Green County Fair and the District Fair in Craighead County.
Cindy showed us her new present quilt that she is working on.
She is also working on this gorgeous elephant applique quilt.
Patsy brought her own disappearing nine patch quilt.
Wanda has been working on the border for her Quilt of Valor.
Here's Ann and Becky with the one of the first of the examples that Ann brought for her demonstration.

Ann showed us how she took a finished ordinary nine patch quilt block
and cut it thru the middle both up and down and from side to side.
Then she spun the blocks to make a new arrangement.

September 17, 2012

Show and tell began with Ann Bowers Disappearing nine patch or I believe she called it twisted nine patch quilt which will be the next meetings activity/ tutorial.

Ann Bower again with another quilt.
Wanda Prince brought her lovely design that she made all by hand with a combination of applique and embroidery.

Cindy Albright is showing us one of her "Quilt of Valor" quilts that she had done.
This one was a quilt as you go design,

I think this quilt was from a trash to treasure design and was also done by Cindy Albright. Both of these quilts and a few others were on display at the Craighead County public library during October. It was a great show done by the Loose Threads Guild of which Cindy is also a member.

This beautiful quilt was done by Joanne Schanda.
I don't know how they get so much done and do it so well!  Ann Ferris brought this darling quilt that she calls Mr Frog and Friends. So cute!
Jan McGee did they batik stars lap quilt.

Then tonight we did pillow cases for the children's hospital
We all brought specialty prints and we whipped out several pillow cases. Lillian was kind enough to bring her serger so I think we mainly cut and got them ready to sew and then took them to Lillian or whoever was on the machine to run them together.

I heard from Jan the next day and here is what her email said.
Hello LADIES!
You are a fantastic group of ladies.  We made 34 pillowcases last
night.  Cindy gave me fabric for about 9 more.  I still have about 10
to make here at home.  SO>>>> that means I'll send more than 50 pillow
cases to Conquer Cancer.  THANK YOU SO MUCH!  I am overwhelmed with
your generosity.
When you have a few minutes of spare time keep making
pillowcases.  I'll continue to wash, pack and mail the pillowcases.
To me. it is a great stress reliever.  I can make a pillow case in
about 10 minutes and feel I've put a smile on a child's face and that
makes me smile, also.
Thanks again.  I'll get them in the mail early next week.  This
week is going to be busy.
You gals are the GREATEST!!!!!
Jan

That's all for now folks. Monday night we will we doing the nine patch don't forget to bring you squares. Ann Bowers with be doing the demonstration. Thanks

August 2012 Meeting

We had a night meeting in August. Several members brought quilts for our show and tell. Unfortunately, once again I have procrastinated and not uploaded them right away and forgotten who did what so you will have to guess or remember. I am posting in the order that I took them in.
I apologize for messing up this photo. But it looks like our challenge fabric.

I do know that the quilt up above makes me want to take out my box of charm squares and start making half square triangles. I love the color play.
Cindy made this "Quilt of Valor" I think.... Looks nice any way.
I don't know who is hiding behind this zigzag quilt.
This is so cute. Some little boy is really going to love this quilt.
I love Patsy's angel wall hanging.
Three D wall hanging.
In August we had a tutorial from Ann Ferris showing how to do pin-less semi paperless machine applique and piecing. She had been to a class/seminar with Sharon Schamber and shared some of what she learned. First she set up her machine and area and demonstrated how to do curved piecing and easy way.
This technique uses two sheets of freezer paper and washable glue with a pinpoint tip.
The seam allowance is ironed down.
Then the seam is glued.
Sorry,  I stopped taking pictures at this point as it was really getting interesting. She completed a New York Beauty block using this technique. Should have gotten more pictures. She sited two books written by Sharon Schamber and her daughter Cristy Fincher "Piece by Piece Machine Applique" and "Piec-lique". I went home and ordered the first title that night and I

Hope to see everyone at the 09/17/2012 meeting.

July 2012 Meeting

Hello everyone! I'm sorry to be so late in updating the blog. I just plain forgot about it. Sorry! I hope it's better late than never. Here goes.

Show and tell this month begin with  Ann Ferris sharing her fan quilt that was made in the drunkard paths manner. She will be teaching curved seams for drunkards paths quilts this Monday.

Jan Magee brought her Pineapple quilt to show us. She has completely quilted it now. A lot of work.
Melinda brought her Christmas Quilt that was begun during the tutorial that Jan taught on "gibbles and bits" which is could loosely be described as crazy quilting log cabin style till you get to a desired size. You then set the block wonky style using a long rectangle. I used Darlene Zimmerman's tall triangle tool to cut mine. I had very little waste and also using this method of cutting you end up with straight grain of fabric on all the outside edges of the finished block. It was a good class. I did my 25 squares and still hadn't come close to using up all my Christmas fabric. Of course June Ann might have had a sale on Christmas fat quarters and caused me to build the darn thing up again. Oh well!
Patsy did not disappoint this month. She has another darling little quilt that she appliqued and pieced. She looks very proud of it as she should. Wonder if she'll be taking that to the fair?

It's been so long I don't remember who did this gorgeous quilt, but I love it. Could be Viola since she's on one end of it. I really like it.
This quilt takes the cake this evening for wow factor. Viola has got the whole down where she is piecing together irregular shaped blocks. This is a large quilt. The girls are on the platform holding it up and we still can't see them in this picture. Want some more views?
How about even closer?
Up this close you can see the intricate detail in this quilt. All the details were appliqued on her embroidery machine. I can't wait till I retire so I can stay home a quilt all the time.

We began a half square triangle swap. Last month we agreed on 2" finished triangles.

Here is a link to a site where you can download the .pdf file to print as much half square triangle paper as you like. http://www.quiltingandwhatnot.ca/pdf_files/twoinfinhst.pdf I will bring preprinted pages but you might like to make some more. I have measured the fabric pieces needed and it would be safe to cut pieces a little over 8" x 10".  This seems to waste the least amount of fabric. You want an equal amount of dark and light pieces. See you Monday!

Don't forget to bring your machines and cutting and sewing stuff.

Here is the link to her main website she has tips on how to make the hsq's and more sizes.
http://www.quiltingandwhatnot.ca/Half-Square-Triangle.html

The grid we will be using is the 2" finished and PLEASE be sure to make sure your printer prints the size correctly. In adobe acrobat reader you will select print actual size or 100%. There is a little square printed on the page that is for you to lay a ruler over to check your gauge with.

June 2012 Meeting

Tonight was the night that all that were participating in the quilt challenge we to have brought our blocks. We had our regular show and tell and there were a few items to look at.
I think it was Mary that brought this little dress that she embellished. Really cute!

Viola brought her Jacob's Ladder blocks. Becky seems to like it. Nice haircut Becky!

Lillian brought her latest bed size quilt. I don't know where she finds the time. She did the quilting of this on her own machine.
Here is a detail from Lillian's quilt. It appears to be appliqued but it is actually pieces. She counted the leaves and there are over 300 of them and 49 flowers. It's a beautiful quilt.

The Challenge

This is the fabric we were all given a fat quarter of. We were to make a quilt not larger than 36". Any thing goes.

Here is what we came up with.

Viola's

Ann Ferris's Love the way she's peeking out over the top.
Lillian's Again I say where does she find the time????
Melissa's
Mary Ann's
Patsy's
Jean's
Janette's
Melinda's
Ann's (The back)
